What Is Memory Foam?

Memory Foam is a material that bends to shape a body when pressure is applied, and after that pressure is removed, the foam reverts to its original shape.

This type of foam goes way back as it came about for the first time in the 1960s by NASA for use in the seats of their spaceships.

Foam such as this is a type of viscoelastic polyurethane material that absorbs pressure and insulation. The various chemicals in memory foam help it to retain its original shape for longer than a normal mattress, no matter the force applied.

Foams like these slowly mold into the shape of the person laying on them, allowing them to distribute your body weight across the entire foam evenly.

Being highly resilient, you will need to add pressure slowly for it to mold, and if you try to add pressure faster, it will take longer to transform itself into your shape.

It takes about five to ten seconds to revert to its original shape after removing pressure. If you have ever laid on memory foam for longer and have felt it becoming more flexible, this is because of its ability to absorb body heat.

This helps make it feel softer the longer you are lying on it. Each type of brand or company has its way or recipe for creating memory foam, so not all foams may offer the same elasticity or softness.

Is Memory Foam Bad For Muscles?

Memory Foam can be good or bad depending on a lot of reasons. These reasons stem from all kinds of sources, mainly including your sleeping position, body weight, or if you have back problems.

The following is a list of reasons why memory foam can cause discomfort:

  • Memory foam will probably make it worse if you have back pain due to bad posture

You might wake up with tighter back muscles as your memory foam will mold to the shape of your posture. Sleeping through the whole night with a lousy posture will cause you more discomfort.

It doesn’t matter if it’s too soft or firm; you might instead benefit from a normal yet still comfortable mattress.

Should You Get Memory Foam?

This has no straight answer, as it depends on person to person. You may enjoy sleeping on a softer surface with the compression of memory foam, whereas someone else might enjoy sleeping on a more rigid surface.

What may be comfortable for some might be uncomfortable for others. Luckily, you can get memory foam that is soft, firm, or harder with slower compression rates.

While it’s no doubt that memory foam can be cozy for some users, if you have existing problems with muscle pain or issues regarding your back, then it might be better not to opt for memory foam.

If you like to stay cool in bed, get a different mattress but if you want the memory foam anyway, be prepared to keep your home temperature low constantly if you don’t want to feel like your body is heating up.
